We came home Saturday May 26th!

Overall it has been a great week, very busy but great!

Since the last blog so much has happen, hence the reason for no updates.  Sorry but this will get you up to speed.

Tracy went into work with me one evening last week.

Looks like she still runs the place.

It was so good to have her there with me again.

Tracy continued her therapy at Heartland until last Friday.  I prepared the house for her arrival.  As she says “He put grab bars all over the house”.  Not true only in the bathrooms.  I built a 4’ x 4’ step in the garage to allow her plenty of room to maneuver and Mike Titus put the icing on the cake with a railing fit for a Queen!  Well, Tracy is a bit of a Queen to me.

Thanks to all who visited last week and allowed me to get away.

Tracy’s sister Sarah and niece Ellen came up from Batesville Friday night for the weekend.  And what a weekend it was!

Saturday morning Tracy was discharged from Heartland and the festivities started.

Breakfast was enjoyed by all at the Breakfast Club in Madison Heights.  Followed by a Memorial Day Parade.  It had been a while since we had attended a parade, let alone a Memorial Day one and it was so much fun.  Let me take a moment to thank all of you who either serve, have served, or lost someone who gave the greatest sacrifice.  May God Bless all of you!

Afterwards Tracy and Sarah enjoyed manicures and pedicures, and grocery shopping too!  We went to Saturday Night church and returned home to a steak dinner, thank you Sarah.

Sunday was a good day for Tracy as she and Sarah went shopping while I played horrible golf with some of my bestest friends.  I know it’s not a word but that’s what we call each other.

Memorial Day was the day that we said goodbye to Sarah and Ellen, but look forward to their return.  You guys are always welcome!

Tuesday Tracy had an appointment with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor.  It actually ended up being two appointments.  Tracy’s hearing has not been what it was and will, God Willing; get back to what it used to be.  The doctor believes that it may be the result of any or all of the following; Rituxan, IVIG Treatments or the paraneoplastic syndrome.  Hopefully as Tracy’s cognitive abilities continue to improve so will her hearing.

Wednesday, Tracy and I had a meeting with Tom Wosachlo to discuss some work issues.  Afterwards we toured an outpatient rehabilitation center and then had lunch at Five Guys.  Tracy said that she didn’t remember ever eating there before, just like she did a few weeks ago, but as soon as we walked inside she said she did and ordered like a pro and even said not to get the large fries as there is way to many of them.

Today we finally got Tracy the haircut that she has wanted for over week.  Diana Bono once again hooked Tracy up.  Thanks Diana.  Afterwards we had a late lunch with Diana.

All in all it has been a great having Tracy home, a start of a whole new journey, but a welcomed one.

I will be using the CareCalendar.org in the coming weeks to get some help with Tracy’s care.  I may put up a few hours for late next week in the morning to allow me to get into the office for a bit.  I will let you know in a future blog when I set it up.

Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and care.

God Bless and “Never Give Up… Never Ever Give Up!”

The count down to home has begun!

Well, it’s hopefully our last Monday away from home!

Friday was the completion of round 6 of the IVIG treatments and it went well.  We met Lisa and Sophia Harrison for dinner at The Gathering Place, for season fries and pizza!  Meanwhile Drew trout fished the Au Sable River with Ed and Josh Roden.  They all got fish, but I am sure if I had been there, I would have doubled their count!

Saturday was quite the day for Tracy.  We went for a walk around the entire facility, my guess is a quarter of a mile, with the walker.  Then we ate lunch and ran errands to 4-5 spots, with the last being the mall to get Tracy’s watchband resized.  We were out for about 2 ½ hours.

We went to church that evening too.  It is such a blessing to go to church with Tracy again.  After church we went out to dinner with Drew.

I left Tracy for the night a little after 9PM and started building the landing in the garage to make it easier for Tracy to get in the house.  I got the deck built and still need to put up a handrail to finish it.  I alsost need to find time to add handrails to both of the bathrooms.  I think I need to add four to the master bath and one to the ½ bath.  I think there are a couple of other things but, but I need to check the list.

Sunday morning I got up early to see Tracy before I headed out for a golf outing.  We had breakfast together and I left around 9:15 for golf.

While I was gone Nancy Moses, the Harrison’s (Jon, Lisa, and Sophie), and Drew stayed with Tracy while I played golf.

Time for a little bragging, I shot my first eagle!  It was a par 4, 357 yard hole.   We used my drive and then I sunk a 40 yard chip shot for the eagle and a skin.

I came back to see Tracy about 5:30 and spent the evening with her talking and playing solitaire.  Drew went to the annual meeting at church and then came to visit again also.

Monday was quite the day.  Therapy started about 9:30AM and ended around noon with a 20 minute break.  We spent the break outside enjoying the beautiful sunshine.  We had lunch and then Tracy said that she wanted to go shoe shopping, so we went shoe shopping.  We bought 4 pairs of shoes, two for Tracy and two for Drew!  How did that happen?  They each got two pair and I got nothing but the receipt!  We were out for a couple of hours and returned to Heartland to meet Drew and have dinner together.

After dinner Jane Riley came to visit.  It was her second visit and she was so excited to see how well Tracy was doing, compared to her visit in late January.  Tracy recognized Jane as soon as she walked into her room.   It was good to see her again and for Tracy and Jane to get to talk.

Tuesday morning I had a meeting at 8AM that didn’t end until 11AM.  So I didn’t get to see Tracy until after lunch as I went shopping for grab bars and a shower seat.  They said that Tracy ate all of her breakfast and all but a bite or two of her lunch!  I hope she continues to eat so she can get her calorie intake high enough to get her off of her PEG tube.

I still am not sure if I will continue use the Care Calendar or not.  I have had a few people sign up, so I am not sure how much of a help it will be.  For those of you who haven’t seen it, here is the info to get to it.

You will need to enter this Calendar Code is 113185 and the Security Code is 6428 to access the calendar.

Again my goal is not to force you into a time, but rather to see when people are planning to visit, hopefully back to back or close to each other, so that I can get some blocks of time to myself to get some things done.

Thank you to those of you who have used the CareCalendar.org website.

That’s all I have for now.

I think I have the CareCalendar working now.

Sorry to those of you who tried to use the CareCalendar and couldn't.  But, I think I have it straightened out now.  If you can't stay the full hour that okay, but please sign up anyway, so that I can plan to get some things done when people are signed up back to back.

Hopefully this will work, so that I can use it after we get home next week.

Here is the website again - http://www.carecalendar.org/index.php?cid=113185

The Calendar ID is 113185 and the Security Code is 6428.  You should not need the Calendar ID, but I have supplied incase you do.

I will also start another meal calendar in the next week or two.  Not sure whether I will restart the Takethemameal website or use the CareCalendar site, but will let you know in a future blog.

God Bless and "Never Give Up... Never Ever Give Up!"

One More Week at Heartland w/Calendar info

Tuesday May 15th

Tracy climbed a full flight of stairs, 15 steps with the aid of her Occupational and Physical therapists.  It took awhile but she made it!  Coming back down was another story.  It appeared to be overwhelming to her and she nervously came down them.  It just seems that if she could just relax or gain more confidence things would be easier for her, I know due time.

Halfway, half full or half empty?

We had IVIG treatment #2 of dose 6 that afternoon and then treated Trace to a cook out at home!  Drew, Tracy, Murphy and I finally had our first meal at home since November 19th!  Thank God!!!  It was simple but great.  We ate on the patio and Murphy got Tracy’s leftovers, just like old times.

Wednesday May 16th,
Tracy walked outside with a cane.  This was her first time walking outside with cane and did quite well.  She also did a load of wash in occupational therapy!

We finished treatment #3 about 6PM and ordered take out from Wong’s Garden our favorite Chinese take out and took it back to Heartland.

Thursday May 17th,
I had an eye appointment at 8:45AM, had my eyes dilated, and didn’t regain my site until after noon.  But got back in time to go outside for a lengthy walk with Tracy and the therapists, thank God for sunglasses.  Then Tracy climbed that same flight of stairs again, but much easier than it was on Tuesday.  Coming back down was much easier too!

I was also informed that they would be teaching me how to do Tracy’s tube feeds on Friday in anticipation of her pending discharge.  At this point we were not sure when she would be discharged (more on that later).  She then ate lunch, did well but needs to eat much more in order to get off of the tube feeds.

IVIG #4 was completed around 5:15 and we headed to the office.  Once we got there Tracy recognized the building and immediately made herself at home once inside.  She walked with a walker straight to her desk, sat down and started to rummage through her desk, just like she had just gotten back from vacation, a seven-month vacation.

Then dinner with Drew at Five Guys Burgers and Fries!  She didn’t remember eating there before, but she ate well!  We returned back to Heartland around 7:45, 15 minutes before visiting hours were over.  But I stayed until 9:15, when Tracy fell asleep.  It may sound silly but I hate to leave before she falls asleep.

Tracy and I also said goodbye to Drew tonight too.  He is headed to Grayling fishing with Ed and Josh Roden for the day tomorrow.  I am jealous and would’ve loved to gone but with Tracy’s discharge in the air and a possible golf outing Sunday, there was not way I could be away from her that much.  They will have a great time and I am sure they will be texting and rubbing it in!

That pretty much sums up the week so far.

Now on Tracy’s discharge.  She is currently scheduled to be discharged on Saturday morning May 25th.  This is also when the insurance runs out.  Isn’t God good!

This is where you come in.  The later discharge means I can play golf on Sunday, provided I can get some friends scheduled to visit Tracy on Sunday.  My outing is at 10AM and would love to have 3 or 4 hours of visitors.  My outing includes lunch and dinner and I should return between 4-5PM.  I am sorry for the short notice, but if Tracy was to be discharged this Saturday, I wasn’t going to play.

To help facilitate this I created the attached calendar.  My hope is that this website works out well, so than people can schedule visits in blocks of time to allow me to get to the office and take care of errands and things around the house.  So this next week is a trial run for when Tracy comes home.

Here are the codes to get in:

    CALENDAR ID      :   113185
    SECURITY CODE :   6428

Again my goal is not to force you into a time, except for this Sunday, but rather see when people will visit, hopefully back to back or close to each other, so that I can get some blocks to myself to get some things done.

Prayer Requests
1.    Tracy continue to progress at the rate she is.
2.    Drew and the Roden’s have a safe and great trip.
3.    That I can find sometime for myself and work.
4.    Thank God, for His goodness and miraculous healing and Drew's AP tests being over.

God Bless and “Never Give Up… Never Ever Give Up!”

Well another week is in the books!

Sorry the blogging didn’t work the way I had hoped last week.  I will try to do better.  We are currently at Beaumont for IVIG treatments.

So here we go with a day-by-day blow.

Monday May 7th

Our 1st trip back to University of Michigan, I was worried about how Tracy would handle the ride to Ann Arbor.  She did so well I was jealous!  She slept almost the entire way. (A baby was just born; they play Brahms Lullaby when one is born)  We got there on time, waited the customary 30 minutes and then met with a Neuro-Oncologist for the next hour and half or so.

He was really pleased, actually tickled with the progress that Trace has made.  To quote him, “I didn’t expect to see you sitting up and conversing with me!”  He ran her through a battery of tests in the office, all with smiles as he performed them.  He said that it is his belief that the paraneoplastic syndrome had mainly affected the synapses of Tracy’s nervous system and to some extent her cerebellum.  He was very encouraging saying that there appeared to be minimal effect to the cerebellum and that the synapses are regenerative.  Thank God!  He wants to see us back in 5 weeks.

Afterward we went back to the 5th floor, where Tracy had spent her entire four-month stay.  Everyone was so excited and encouraged by Trace’s progress.  Nurses where calling other nurses, Dr. Berg was calling other doctors, and Kristen, our Occupational Therapist was calling other therapists to come and see how well Tracy was.  It was quite the homecoming if you want to call it that.

It was quite overwhelming for Tracy, as she has no recollection of her stay at either U of M or Beaumont.  I believe this to be “a Blessing and a curse” as Monk would say.
A blessing because I don’t think I want her to know what she has been through and a curse because she has no concept of how bad she was or how far she has come.

We ate a late lunch at Angelo’s and picked up a sandwich at Maize and Blue for Drew, two of our favorite Ann Arbor haunts.

We returned to Heartland about 4:30.  It was quite the day for her as we left for Ann Arbor at 9:30.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday were quiet and back to normal, if that is what you want to call it.  Tracy has therapy 3 times a day, speech therapy for half an hour, physical therapy and occupational therapy both for 45 minutes and plays countless hours of solitaire on her phone.

Thursday we had a visit from Tracy’s PMR (physical medicine and rehabilitation) doctor who informed us that he was anticipating a discharge on May 19th!  I was shocked; Tracy is doing so well, but a week!  How was I supposed to get the house ready for her?  I didn’t even know what needed to be done to get it ready.

The Honor Student and Proud Parents

Friday was another story!  Drew had an Honors Ceremony at school at 7:30AM!!!  I was up before 6AM and in Tracy’s room by 7AM.  It was a quick trip to his school and we even got there early.  Drew was honored Suma Cum Laude for his grade point average (another baby is born) and also for a perfect score on his ACT for math.  I don’t think I have mentioned it before J, but we are so proud of him.

After the ceremony we went out to breakfast with Lisa Harrison and then home for a home evaluation with the therapists.  The evaluation was quite enlightening.  We need to install several grab bars in the bathrooms, a new handrail for the staircase, enlarge the step into the house from the garage, and I am sure I’m forgetting something else.  I then told the therapists that the PMR doctor had mentioned discharging Tracy on May 19th and they too were floored.  They agreed that she was making great progress but they couldn’t see her or me being ready for her to come home on the 19th.  They told me to meet with the case manager on Monday to discuss it further and that they would do the same.

While we were home Trace went upstairs easily, traversed the bedroom and bathroom with ease, but the return trip back down the stairs was quite frightening to her.

We returned back to Heartland around noon and had speech therapy later in the day.  I thought that I would get home early Friday night, but Tracy had a different thought, like stay up until 9:30PM!  I couldn’t believe it, she was up at 6AM too, had the same day I had, but had an hour nap after therapy.  I guess it was a power nap, because I didn’t have one and was exhausted.

When I got home I did some laundry and went to bed.

Saturday was fairly quiet.  I got up and played golf at 7:30AM and was in Tracy’s room about 11AM.  She remembered that I was playing golf, so she called Drew around 10:45 to find out where he was and what he was doing.

We spent the afternoon playing solitaire and then we all went to church Saturday evening.  It was so nice to be there, Tracy was so happy to be there, I don’t think she remembers going in April.  She sang, followed the sermon and bible scriptures.  It was so good to see her worshiping our Faithful God again.

Afterwards we went out to dinner and then back to Heartland and played more solitaire.  It turned out to be another late night with Tracy not going to sleep until around 9:30PM.

Mothers Day

Another milestone day as far as I am concerned.  Drew and I slept in, as we had not been sleeping so well.  I got up before him, and also went to bed before him, and went to be with Trace.  Drew showed up around 11AM with a Mothers Day Card and tickets to Earth, Wind and Fire, Tracy’s most favorite band.  We then went out to lunch for a Thai food and sushi buffet.  Tracy ate very well and so did I, but Drew took it to a whole new level, 26 pieces of sushi and some Thai food to boot!  Oh to be young again!

After lunch Drew went home to prepare for four Advanced Placement exams and Tracy and I went for a quick Sunday afternoon drive.  After returning to Heartland we started the solitaire games again.  We play so much solitaire that we even have Drew playing now.

It ended up being another late night for Tracy.

Monday May 14th

Tracy only had two therapies today, as one of the therapists was sick.  So it was a lighter than normal morning.  But it must have been exhausting as Tracy took a little nap and played more solitaire.  Two o’clock came and it was time to head to Beaumont as we started the 1st treatment of round 6 of her IVIG treatments.  As I wrote prior to this Tracy was napping again and slept for 2 ½ hours, so it will probably be another late night.

Drew met us for dinner at the Alibi restaurant.  Tracy ate a plate of antipasto salad and a slice of pizza, that’s a lot for her!  So hopefully the full belly will compensate for the afternoon naps.

Prayer requests for this week would be:
1.     That the IVIG treatments would continue to help and go smoothly as they are every afternoon.
2.     Tracy cognitive state would improve.
3.     Drew would do well with his exams and sleep well too.
4.     I would find some time to get into the office.

That’s all I got for now.

God Bless and “Never Give Up… Never Ever Give Up!”

Well it's been a while

It's been a couple of weeks since I last wrote, so please forgive me, as I have been a bit busy.

Tracy is doing GREAT!  Since the last blog a lot has happened, so I think I will just give you a running list of accomplishments.

  • Went to church
  • Drew turned 17!
  • We all, yes I said all, went out for Drew's Birthday dinner.
  • Tracy is walking exceptionally well with the aid of a walker.
  • They have steps in the gym and Tracy has mastered all 4 of them, even doing them 4 times consecutively for a total of 16.  That's both up and down!
  • Her memory continues to improve, the short term is a little slower than the long-term
  • We have completed all 4 of the 4 weekly Rituxan treatments and now will only do them every 3 months
  • We have completed another round of IVIG treatments with me driving Tracy to them every afternoon
  • We went out to dinner 3 nights this last week
  • Tracy had a visit from Murphy
  • She has had many guests
  • Built puzzles and played more solitaire in the last week than we had previously played in our life
Re-United after 5 months!

These highlights are quite amazing but doing things as a family again is definitely one of the highlights.  As I look back at this journey I am so thankful that Drew got to spend another birthday with his mother, on April 26th, I got to celebrate 22 years of knowing Tracy and then just this last week we got to celebrate 21 years of marriage!  And to think that 4 months ago I had no idea whether I would have a wife that would even know I was her husband or let alone have her to celebrate it with.  God has blessed our family so much!

Tomorrow we go to Ann Arbor for Tracy's follow up at UM.  They are going to be so surprised!

I have discontinued the Take them a meal website as we try to eat as a family every night and transferring the meals from home to here at Heartland would be very difficult.  Again, Thank you to all of you who have provided meals and/or money to purchase meals, you have truly been a blessing to us.  Thanks also to all of you who donated nights at the Med Inn for me, you covered almost 3 of the 4 months we were there!

Now for the whining.  Please pray for Tracy's memory and comprehension, as she doesn't understand why she is at Heartland.  She also wants so desperately to be independent and does not want to call for nurses to monitor her movements from bed to walker or wheelchair to go to the bathroom.  Drew and I worry about the possibility of her falling and extending her recovery.  She refuses to listen to us, thinking that we are crazy and difficult.  Drew and I thought we had learned to be patient while we were at UM, but are now having to take to a whole new level.  Please pray for patience for us and Tracy as we struggle with these issues.

I will try to update every other day or so with a few sentences as I am finding it more difficult to blog regularly.  While we were at the U of M I would blog at night before I went to bed.  Currently I spend approximately 12 hours a day with Tracy, then try to spend time with Drew before we go to bed and take care of things around the house in between.

God Bless and "Never Give Up... Never Ever Give Up!"
